Portable Gold-melting Furnace
OverviewThe Modutemp WW31A-Cruc portable gold melting furnace is a rugged, easily transported unit, originally designed to be set up and powered, sometimes by a generator, for the melting of small quantities of gold and separation from host material. In this process, it is necessary to raise the temperature of the gold nuggets or particles to about 1080 degree C, in a crucible with a quantity of borax as a flux. The furnace is manufactured using a very strong, extruded aluminum frame, clad with screwed-on panels, all powder-coated for long-lasting protection. The furnace casing has a handle fitted at each end for ease of transport. The stainless steel lid incorporates a ceramic heat-proof tile allowing a hot crucible to be lifted out of the furnace and safely put down. One crucible and a pair of suitable tongs for this purpose are supplied with the furnace. The working chamber is circular with an internal diameter of 125mm and depth of 200mm. This allows the use of standard silicon carbide crucibles of 'A2' size (2 kg of copper). This size can hold up to 4.8 kg of gold, normally more than this type of furnace would be required to handle.
The heating element is made from the best quality Kanthal A-1 wire and is a 2.4kW rating, requiring a 240volt supply of 10 amps. The temperature control system uses a simple set-point controller allowing the furnace to automatically heat to a set temperature and maintain that temperature. |
